Build a Query

A query is a question that is answered by comparing records on two or more list screens. For example: what jobs do these learners hold, what classes include this activity, or what activities can these instructors teach? Whether your query is simple or complex, you should follow these basic steps to arrive at the answer:

1. Ask a question.

What do you want to know? For example, you might ask what jobs are held by learners on Shift A?

2. Break your question down into smaller questions.

In this example, you first must find out who works on Shift A. Then you can ask which jobs they hold.

3. Begin with a list screen.

To find out who works on Shift A, you would view the Learner List.

4. Filter the list.

Use the Filter function on the toolbar to reduce the Learner List to only those on Shift A.

5. Select a query.

Use the Query To function on the toolbar to ask for jobs these learners currently hold. Ability LMS compares your list of Shift A learners to the job role list. Then it displays a list of jobs that are held by learners on Shift A.

6. Repeat.

For more complex queries, repeat steps 4-5 as needed until you reach your answer.

Note In many cases you can take multiple paths to arrive at the same answer. The Ability LMS Query gives individuals the freedom to follow their own logic.
